Featuring fabric

The one thing we quilters have in common is our love of fabric. We collect, fondle, arrange and store it carefully. We all have that ‘special’ fabric that attracts us repeatedly, so we want to ensure that whatever we sew with it deserves centre of attention.

Carmen Dettino’s ‘special’ fabric is printed with images of Minnie Mouse. She collects variations of Mickey and Minnie Mouse prints when she sees them. I’ve seen several of her stitched projects made with these prints but nothing like her latest construction – personalised sneakers.

“I bought a kit from Sneaker Stitch from their stand at the Sydney Quilt Show last year,” she says. “It contained everything I needed to make my sneakers, but I just needed to add fabric. I chose my Minnie Mouse fabric.”

Carmen machine quilted her fabric, but all other construction was done by hand. She is pleased with her unique sneakers and knows they won’t get mistaken for anyone else’s. Is there no end to a quilter’s desire to highlight their favourite fabric?
